Smart Summer Watering

How to Keep Your Trees Happy While Using Water Efficiently

Summer in the Bay of Plenty can be tough on trees. Long hot days, drying winds, and the occasional surprise drought all mean your trees work harder to stay healthy. The good news? A few smart watering habits can make all the difference — keeping your trees thriving while using water efficiently and responsibly.

At SG Trees, we’re all about helping you care for your property with confidence. Here’s our straightforward guide to watering your trees the right way this summer.

1. Water Deeply, Not Often

A slow, deep soak encourages roots to grow further into the soil, making your trees stronger and more resilient. Quick, shallow watering might look helpful, but most of that water evaporates before your trees can use it. Aim to water infrequently but thoroughly — your trees (and your water bill) will thank you.

2. Water in the Cool of the Day

Early mornings or late evenings are the best times to water. Cooler temperatures mean less evaporation and more water reaching the root zone. It’s a simple timing change that saves water and improves results instantly.

3. Mulch is Your Summer Best Friend

Mulch helps lock in moisture, protects soil from heat, and slows down evaporation. A 5–10 cm layer of organic mulch (like wood chips or bark) around the base of your tree will keep your soil cooler and your watering more effective. Just keep mulch clear of the trunk to avoid rot.

4. Prioritise Young and Newly-Planted Trees

If you need to ration water, start with your youngest trees. Their root systems are still developing, making them more vulnerable to heat stress. Mature trees are generally hardier and can tolerate dry periods more easily.

5. Check Soil Moisture Before You Reach for the Hose

Push your finger or a small trowel into the soil. If the top 5–10 cm is dry, it’s time to water. If it’s still moist, hold off. Simple checks like this prevent over-watering — something trees actually dislike as much as drought.

6. Keep an Eye Out for Heat Stress

Wilting, yellowing leaves or early leaf drop can be signs that your tree is struggling. A proper watering routine, paired with mulch and good seasonal maintenance, will help prevent these issues before they develop into bigger problems.
