SG Trees Is Now WINZ Approved — Seriously Good Tree Care, Made More Accessible for Bay of Plenty Homes
Good news for homeowners and tenants across Tauranga and the wider Bay of Plenty: SG Trees is now a WINZ-approved supplier for tree maintenance and removal work.
If you've ever looked at an overgrown, leaning, or storm-damaged tree on your property and thought, "that needs dealing with, but the timing's just not great financially" — this is worth knowing about. Becoming WINZ approved means that, for people who qualify, the cost of essential tree work may be covered or partly covered through Work and Income assistance. And because we handle everything from the cut to the cleanup, including all green waste, there are no surprise extras to budget for.
Here's what it means and how it works.
What "WINZ approved" actually means
Work and Income (WINZ) can help people meet certain essential or urgent costs they're unable to pay for themselves. Essential home repairs and maintenance is one of the cost categories WINZ recognises, and in many cases a tree that's become a genuine hazard — blocking access, threatening a roof, power lines, or a fence, or left dangerous after a storm — falls squarely into that "essential" bracket.
Being an approved supplier means we're set up to provide the documentation WINZ needs (a clear, itemised written quote) so your application can be assessed quickly and paid directly toward the work where applicable.
Who can access this funding
You don't have to be on a benefit to get help, though the type of assistance differs:
If you're receiving a main benefit, you may be able to apply for a Special Needs Grant or an Advance Payment of Benefit. Each payment covers lots of different costs, including home repairs and maintenance. Work and Income
If you're not on a benefit, you may still qualify for a Recoverable Assistance Payment. This is essentially the same as an Advance Payment, but it's for anyone not receiving a Work and Income benefit. MoneyHub
A key distinction worth understanding: a Special Needs Grant generally doesn't have to be paid back, while Recoverable Assistance and Advance Payments are usually repaid over time. Eligibility is income- and asset-tested, and how much you get depends on your situation and what you need help with. WINZ assesses each application individually, so it's always worth a conversation with them. Community LawWork and Income
For tenants: if a tree on your rental is dangerous, your landlord is usually responsible for that maintenance, so check with them first. But where the responsibility sits with you, the same WINZ pathways may apply.
How to access it — the simple version
Get in touch with SG Trees. Tell us what's going on with your tree, and we'll come and assess it. If it's genuinely a maintenance or safety job, we'll provide a detailed written quote — which is exactly what WINZ needs to see.
Contact Work and Income. You can call them on 0800 559 009 or apply through your MyMSD account. Explain the cost and that it's essential home maintenance, and provide our quote. For an urgent or essential need, you'll usually need to provide an invoice or quote — which we'll have ready for you. Community Law
WINZ assesses your application. They'll talk with you to understand your situation and let you know what information you need to provide. Work and Income
We get to work. Once it's approved, we'll book you in and take care of everything — the work itself and all the green waste removal, so you're left with a clean, safe property.
Why this matters for the Bay of Plenty
We see a lot of trees in this region that have been put off for "one day" — often because of cost. After a big blow through the Bay, that backlog of leaning gums, cracked limbs, and trees too close to the house only grows. Being WINZ approved means more local families and tenants can deal with a hazard before it becomes an emergency, rather than after.
That's exactly the kind of healthy, safe, well-cared-for property we're here to help with — seriously good tree care, now within reach for more of our community.
Got a tree that needs sorting? Give SG Trees a call on 022 536 4170 or request a quote here. We'll assess the job, provide the paperwork, and walk you through the next steps.
Note: This information is a general guide only. Eligibility, payment types, and amounts are determined by Work and Income based on individual circumstances. We recommend confirming your situation directly with WINZ.
