Palm cleaning: keep dead fronds and seeds out of your garden

If you have a palm in your garden, you know about the marbles. Palm seeds drop onto your lawn, paths, deck and garden beds. They roll underfoot, collect in corners and turn up in places you’ve already cleared. Dead fronds make the mess worse.

Palm cleaning is the fix. Here is what it involves and why it is worth doing regularly.

What palm cleaning involves

Palm cleaning means removing the dead and dying fronds from your palm. We also take off the seed heads before the seeds drop. This leaves the palm looking tidy and stops the seeds from landing in your garden.

Palms do not shed neatly. Old fronds hang on the trunk until they dry out and fall. Seeds ripen on the palm and drop over time. Cleaning the palm removes both before they become your problem.

Why it matters for your garden

Seeds that fall into garden beds can sprout. Seedlings pop up among your plants and have to be pulled out. Seeds and fronds also build up on paths, driveways and decks, where they are untidy and can be a slip hazard.

Dead fronds are heavy. When they fall in wind or rain, they can damage cars, fences, outdoor furniture and garden plantings. They can also hurt someone standing below. Here in the Bay of Plenty, storms and strong winds bring fronds down without warning. Regular palm cleaning reduces that risk.

A cleaned palm also looks better. Your garden, entrance or commercial property presents well without a skirt of brown fronds.

Why tall palms need a qualified arborist

Many palms are far too tall to clean from the ground. Working at height takes the right training, equipment and experience. Some palms also grow close to powerlines, which adds a serious risk.

This is not a DIY job, and it is not one for just any contractor. Our tree care team is qualified and experienced in working at heights and around powerlines. We know how to remove fronds and seed heads safely, without harming the palm or your property.

What to expect from us

We start with an on-site assessment. We look at your palm and the area around it, explain what needs doing and why, and give you a straightforward quote. Our assessment also notes any other jobs we can see that may need attention, such as hedge trimming or tree pruning. You decide what to do and when. There is no pressure.

You will know what is happening from the first visit to the day we confirm the job is complete. When we finish, we take all the fronds, seeds and rubbish away. You are not left with a pile to deal with.
